About the Author

GBITEE DOYEN GBITEE is the former Production and Circulation Manager of The Inquirer Newspaper (1991–1998) in Monrovia, Liberia. He holds an Associate in Applied Science degree in Prepress and Printing Technology from Hennepin Technical College (2006) in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Born and raised in Liberia and now a naturalized U.S. citizen, Gbitee’s path to authorship began not in a newsroom by title, but by inspiration. Working closely with some of Liberia’s most talented editors and journalists, he developed a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling. His experience in helping shape stories that made headlines sparked a lifelong passion for uncovering the truth through narrative.

In 2013, Gbitee began studying The Art of Storytelling, Creative Nonfiction Writing, and The Skeptic’s Guide to American History through The Great Courses learning platform. These studies, combined with his personal curiosity, led him to take a skeptical guide to Liberia’s own history, a journey that inspired years of research, reading, and writing.

Through his research, Gbitee discovered that many historical accounts of Liberia’s founding are partial, misunderstood, or filled with myth and contradiction. He observed that while most people, Liberians and others—know the general story of freed African Americans establishing Liberia, few understand why they came or how independence was achieved ahead of all other African nations under colonial rule. This realization fueled his mission: to re-examine and retell the Liberian story with balance, accuracy, and depth.

He credits a former Inquirer editor (now deceased) for inspiring him to transform his research into published works and for helping craft his book titles. He also acknowledges the guidance of his chief editor, who mentored him through the research and citation process. As a photographer, Gbitee understands the impact of pairing visuals with narrative bringing history vividly to life through the images of the people who shaped it.

His first Book, Coming to Africa, explores why and how freed African Americans came to West Africa in 1822 and the beginnings of the Liberian settlement. His forthcoming Book, The Declaration of Independence, continues that journey, examining how and why the settlers gained independence in 1847 to found the Republic of Liberia.

Now semi-retired, Gbitee continues to write, research, and photograph, dedicated to telling Liberia’s story through a truthful, human lens. Over the years, he has also worked as a Nursing Assistant, Photographer, and Press Operator, roles that deepened his understanding of people, purpose, and perseverance.

“History is not just what was written — it’s what was lived. My goal is to give voice to those who lived it”.
